Pregnant women around the world seeking maternity care from the health systems in their countries instead receive ill treatment that ranges from disrespect of their autonomy and dignity to outright abuse: physical assault, verbal insults, discrimination, abandonment, or detention in facilities for failure to pay. Disrespect and abuse during maternity care are a violation of a woman's basic human rights. We have to break the silence.
